The Therapeutic and Spiritual Power of Drumming
Drums have been an integral part of human culture for more than 20,000 years, serving as tools for connection, communication and spiritual practices in diverse societies. Recent scientific research has shed light on the profound neurological and psychological effects of drumming, offering insight into its therapeutic potential.
Neurological Impact
Studies have shown that the rhythmic vibrations generated by drums can induce a theta brain wave state in listeners and participants. This theta state is characterized by brain activity between 4-7 Hz and is associated with deep meditation, creativity and heightened intuition. It represents a unique state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep, potentially allowing access to subconscious thoughts and higher states of consciousness.
Trauma Processing and Emotional Healing
The theta state induced by drumming can create a safe psychological space for individuals to process traumatic memories and emotions. By bypassing conscious, analytical thinking, drumming can help unlock repressed memories and feelings, allowing tentative exploration and resolution of past traumas. This process may be particularly beneficial because it activates the brain’s limbic system, which is responsible for emotional regulation and memory formation, possibly recalibrating the fear response associated with traumatic experiences.
Recovery from Addiction
Drumming has shown promising results as adjunctive therapy in addiction treatment. Many addictions are rooted in attachment disorders or attempts to self-medicate emotional pain. The meditative state achieved through drumming can help individuals connect more deeply with themselves, possibly addressing the underlying emotional needs that drive addictive behaviors. By promoting self-connection and emotional regulation, drumming can support the development of healthier coping mechanisms.
Self-connection and Interpersonal Relationships
Regular involvement in drumming practices can increase self-awareness and emotional intelligence. As individuals become more attuned to their inner selves, they can develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and self-love. This internal shift can have a positive impact on interpersonal relationships by reducing the need for external validation. As a result, individuals may be able to make more authentic and meaningful connections with others.
Physiological Benefits
In addition to its psychological effects, drumming is associated with several physiological benefits. These may include reduced stress hormones, increased production of endorphins (natural painkillers), improved immune system function and improved cardiovascular health through rhythmic movement and controlled breathing.
Cultural and Spiritual Significance
It is important to note that drumming has deep cultural and spiritual significance in many traditions worldwide. From shamanic practices to religious ceremonies, drums have long been used as tools for transcendence, community building and connecting with higher powers or states of consciousness.
Conclusion
Although more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind drumming’s therapeutic effects, its potential as a holistic healing modality is increasingly recognized. As both an ancient practice and a subject of modern scientific research, drumming offers a unique bridge between traditional wisdom and contemporary therapeutic approaches, providing a powerful tool for personal growth, emotional healing and spiritual exploration.

Here’s what others think:
Several years ago I bought a drum from Gerard and Ans. A beautiful drum, but I didn’t know yet what to do with it. It remained somewhat uncomfortable.
Then I decided to enroll in the course they set up and it was the right decision. Since then, the drum has come alive for me and I know how and when to use it. I am getting more and more pleasure out of it and really benefit from the teaching and tips in this course.
Highly recommended.
Also, Ans and Gerard’s service is really top notch!
Very nice is the explanation of all parts of the online training and if something is not clear you get good and quick explanation with the phone contact.
With practicing the rhythms, I noticed that it makes me nice and relaxed and more in my body, so I can handle everything much better. And if it’s too much for a while, I go and play the drums. My little dog gets under the drum when I’m practicing.
The samples for yourself are also nice to do for practice, travel or insights, but also that you can experience what it does for others.
And I had asked friends if they wanted to help me practice, so nice drumming sessions and the reactions were, too bad it’s already done, it’s wonderfully relaxing and if you want to practice again just do a message.
I have definitely been inspired by the possibilities of what you can use the drum for and have deeper connection to my shaman drums that I now enjoy using in my life and practice.
Thank you for this beautiful drum training.
Greetings Marian
To still be able to generate income I started giving drumming sessions outside. Because I have such a nice heavy one, this could easily be done at a distance of 1.5 meters. In the woods or by the water with an insight ceremony where herbs, trees or flowers are used in a special way to clarify certain stagnant processes. This process was supported by the drum at the tree which was energetically needed at that moment. What wonderful insights were created!
After renewing Allround drumteachings, I was able to go much further. How much I learned from that! I can now go even deeper with my clients. After doing the trance journey of the course myself a few times and getting the most special insights, I now also dare to use trance journeys with my clients. “Traveling” to ancient knowledge, knowing under the guidance of the drum. Partly because of this course, I have developed wonderful treatments to the rhythm of the moon of which the drum is now a permanent part. Body-oriented and ceremonial treatments for inside and ceremonial treatments for outside to set someone in motion based on the rhythm of the moon, the trees, the herbs. With the right intentions, with the right purity, from the heart, but also letting go of old things.
This has also given me a new target audience: Entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs who also want to develop new things from a place of rest, are at an impasse, feel they can’t get beyond what they are doing now or want to change course in their business but don’t know where to start.
Now I can alternate the treatments of my practice Huid-en-Kruid indoors and outdoors and adapt to the need, feel which drum is needed and be able to adapt the rhythm of the drum to what someone needs. I have a 2nd small drum added for indoors and a 3rd intermediate size is coming.
Different drum rhythms, guiding a drum circle, giving drum healings, taking care of your drum, etc. Very nice! It has caused me to now give drum healings myself, provide Mother Drum meditations and have plans to organize drum circles.
All these things I had wanted to do for some time, but the Drumteachings made my knowledge increase and I felt enough confidence to take the step. For that I am very happy and grateful!

– Every pregnancy is unique, so what works for one may not work for all
Combine with other techniques:
– Integrate drumming with pregnancy yoga or meditation for increased benefits
Key considerations:
Consult your physician:
– Always check with your health care provider before beginning this activity during pregnancy
Individual differences:
– Each baby may react differently to external stimuli
Balanced approach:
– Use drumming as part of a holistic approach to prenatal wellness
Long-term potential:
Some researchers say prenatal exposure to sound may have positive effects on:
– Behavior of newborns
– Early childhood development
– Future musical and language skills
Remember that while drumming can be a great addition to your pregnancy journey, it should complement standard prenatal care, not replace it. The key is to create a positive, stress-free environment for both you and your developing baby.
By incorporating gentle drumming into your pregnancy, you are not only nurturing your own well-being, but you may also be giving your baby a rhythmic head start in life!
And how does that work in geriatrics.
In geriatrics, problems such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression are often observed in elderly patients. These psychological challenges can lead to aggressive behavior, sadness, and feelings of helplessness. In some cases, this can result in regressive or childlike behavior as a coping mechanism.
Recent research shows that music therapy, including the use of drums, can provide significant benefits for geriatric patients:
Cognitive stimulation: A study published in the Journal of Music Therapy (2016) showed that rhythmic activities, such as drumming, can improve cognitive function in the elderly, including working memory and processing speed.
Emotional regulation: According to research in Frontiers in Psychology (2018), active music practice, including drumming, can help regulate emotions and reduce anxiety symptoms in the elderly.
Social interaction: A study in Music Therapy Perspectives (2019) highlighted how group music activities, including drum circles, can reduce social isolation and promote a sense of belonging.
Stress reduction: Research published in Advances in Mind-Body Medicine (2014) showed that drumming can lower cortisol levels, indicating a reduction in stress.
In practice, introducing drumming activities into geriatric care can have several positive effects:
Increased alertness and engagement: The rhythmic element of drumming can bring patients out of their apathetic or withdrawn state, leading to increased alertness and engagement with their environment.
Emotional expression: Drumming provides a nonverbal way to express emotions, which can be especially valuable for patients who have difficulty with verbal communication.
Mindfulness and relaxation: The physical aspect of drumming can help patients “get out of their heads” and be more present in the moment, which can lead to a calming and relaxing experience.
Motor skills: Regular practice of drumming can improve fine and gross motor skills, which is important for maintaining physical functionality in the elderly.
Sensory stimulation: The tactile and auditory aspects of drumming provide valuable sensory stimulation, which is important for cognitive functioning and general well-being.
By integrating drumming activities into geriatric care programs, caregivers/activities counselors can provide a holistic approach that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of older patients. This can lead to improved quality of life, reduced medication dependence, and a more engaged and vibrant living environment in geriatric care facilities.

This is what others think of it
It made it clear to me that I wanted to continue with this! I soon started drumming with children. I give drum circles at every moon celebration and at all rituals I use 1 of my 3 beautiful shaman drums.
Furthermore, I use the drum for meditation, trance travel but also to get in touch with myself.
After the drum teachings, I feel much more connected to my drums and had the tools to put what I learned into practice. For me, playing the drum means coming home and connecting with my soul. I would like to share this with other people!
Made intense journeys and made others travel intensely. So special.
The connection with my beauty or drum was already there, the love and nurturing took other form.
And this one is certainly going even further into the world.
With Gerard, I think of directness, being concrete and also softness.
Aho.
